Woodward Park, Fresno –
The Warriors have had a busy week, running against some of the top teams in the
state at the Stanford Invitational and then opening league competition on
Wednesday. It was a short turn-around
for the Clovis Invitational, which is another strong race featuring top competition
from around the State. “The team was
running a bit tired but they all performed well,” Coach Small said of the
Warrior’s performance Saturday. “We need
to work on not fading the last half of the race but it is understandable
considering this is their 3rd race in 8 days.”
The busy schedule hasn’t seemed to slow down sophomore Ashley
Lara, who finished 23rd in a personal best time of 20:18, a mark
that moves her up to #11 all-time for the Warriors. Lara has been steadily improving finishing as
the Warriors top runner the past three races and was competitive throughout the
5k distance. Lara worked through the early
miles paced by teammate Jessica Xu. The
duo went through the mile in 6:27 and held steady through half way coming
through in 9:40. Giving chase with a
strong start was Kellianne Connolly who was just 12 seconds behind at 9:52 as
teammates Shannon Luu, Vanessa Giacalone, Megan Gillespie and Leia Wang who all
had strong starts as well.
Lara moved strongly through the hills and the later stages of
the race pulling away to finish the last mile in 6:39. Xu was next across the line in 20:50 in her
best showing of 2012. Shannon Luu came
on strong the last mile and ran to a personal best 21:37 while Kellianne
Connolly held on to run 21:57.
The pack of Warriors behind Connolly was having a breakthrough
day of their own. Vanessa Giacalone was
running a solid pace breaking 23 minutes for the first time this season, “I
kept thinking of how Coach said, ‘this is going to hurt,’ and so I just kept
pushing.”
Megan Gillespie and Leia Wang also ran personal best times for
5k solidifying a solid day for the Warriors finishing 10th pace as a team.
For the boys team, it was a solid performance from the
Frosh-Soph boys who also finished 10th in the team standings. Freshman Jeremy Dong led the way running a
freshman record of 18:22. Nathan Lynch
(18:40) and Jason Li (18:48) also had solid performances both breaking 19
minutes. Tejas Reddy and Samuel Han had
breakthrough performances both running mid-19’s, their first time under 20 this
season.
The Warriors now turn their attention to WCAL #2 held at Golden
Gate Park on October 17th.
