Santa Cruz, CA - The sixth annual Watermelon Run kicked off the 2014 cross country season Saturday with a 2.1 mile run through the redwoods. The annual affair is supposed to be an informal "rust burner," a time trial in efforts to transition from the summer training to the more competitive fall. The first actual race is not for another week, no uniforms are dawned, there is no entry list or official start time other than we "start when we are ready." It is about as old school as it gets. And yet there is an underlying competitiveness that never fails to breakthrough. The varsity spots are up for grabs and after a summer of running it is a time to test that fitness.
That competitiveness was on display at the 6th annual Watermelon Run as Nathan Lynch bettered his personal best and moved to #2 all-time. He was not the only one moving up the list. Six Warriors cracked the 13 minute mark this year, nearly matching the previous five years combined. Nedu Ndili improved over two minutes from last season moving to #5 all-time for the Warriors. Also cracking the 13 min mark was Jason Li, Jeremy Dong, Justin Baraona and Peter Enfantino. Top freshman on the day was Kyle Higdon who finished in 13:52.
Leading the way for the girls was Kailey Eddy cracking the 15 minute barrier. Freshman Camille Reed was the second across the line for the Warriors impressively, her mark of 15:35 is one of the top marks for freshman. Another new comer, Lauren Cicisly, had a strong debut with a mark of 16:41. She was followed by Nicole Favre and Leia Wang. Another freshman who finished in the team's top seven was Brianna Becerra who's 17:18 moves her into the team's top 20 all-time list.
The Warriors next travel to Toro Park in Salinas to open their season at the Early Bird Invitational. Races begin at 9 am with the Freshman Girls division.
