Steady Improvment, Strong Performances at WCAL #1; Freshman Boys Second

Baylands Park, Sunnyvale - Just five days after the Stanford Invitational the Warriors came back strong competing in the first league meet of the season.  The Warriors had scoring teams in all seven divisions and a record number of finishers over the new 4k course.  The shorter, flat course combined with cooler temperatures turned the race into a test of speed, highlighting the strength of the Warriors squad.  The day saw many top team and individual performances led by the 4th place finish in the Varsity Girls and 2nd place finish in the freshman boys.

Meet Highlights:

• Varsity Girls showed their grit finishing 4th in the first WCAL meet of the year.  The team effort was due to strong performances from Jessica Xu (7th) and Ashley Lara (8th).  Karen Mac was also a top finisher finishing 16th.

• It was the first day of cross country for Sara Van Wagoner and it turned out to be a good one.  Sara took to the front of the girls JV race and never looked back.  The senior ran away from the field and won by nearly a minute.  Her time of 15:48 was the third fastest of the day for the Warriors.

• Top 10 performances came from Nicole Favre and Vanessa Giacalone in the Frosh-Soph Girls race.  Leia Wang also had a strong run finishing 13th, helping the team to a 4th place finish in the team standings.

• The freshman boys finished second in the team standings behind a very solid pack.  The top 5 runners were separated by a mere 46 seconds.
