Warriors Shine at WCAL Championships

Since the Warriors joined the WCAL in 2003 they have brought home numerous individual championships, CCS qualifiers and a women’s team title in 2006. This season held its own against some of the best performances in the past 9 years.

Two school records fell at the hands of Junior Kristin Sato who won the Triple Jump with a mark of 35-8. She came back later in the day and won again, this time in the Long Jump with a mark of 17-10.75. Another two event winner was freshman Shelby Smallwood. Winning the 100 meters with a time of 12.32 for 100 meters she came back to win the 200 meters just an hour later running a personal best 25.23. Both marks were personal bests in wind legal races.

Also running for the girls team was Isabel Garcia who ran a season best 2:29.72 in the 800 meters finishing 5th. Emily Blaha finished the 1600 meters in 5:37 battling through a cramping hamstring. She held on to finsh 6th place respectably. Also in the distances Morgan Lira finished 2nd in the 3200 meters and advances to the CCS Semi-Finals with a time of 11:51.

For the Boys it was a fantastic day of personal bests and near misses. The 4 x 100 meter relay of Lawson, Severson, Thompson and Lowder started the day off with a season best 43.75 to finish 6th, which is the most competitive event in the WCAL. Their time ranks them #6 all-time for the Warriors and was just 0.03 off of the CCS Automatic Qualifier.

Ryan Severson ran 11.30 running into a headwind of 1.2 meters per second. He later came back and ran a personal best 22.68 for the 200 meters to finish 4th. His time was just 0.07 off of the CCS automatic qualifier, which is the average of what it takes to make the CCS Finals over the past 3 years.

Advancing to the CCS Semi-Finals is Cal McNabb who finished 2nd in the 400 meters in a personal best 50.62. Teammate Travis Lowder had a breakthrough race and lead the race through 300 meters ran an outstanding 51.07. Lowder tied up slightly in the last 20 meters and just missed a qualifying position by .17 finishing 4th.

Sean Davis is the school record holder in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters and sprinted in to win his first WCAL Championship setting a personal best of 1:55.49. Also in the distances was Dustin Laucella, who set personal best in the 1600 (5:13) and 3200 meters (11:25).

In the field events Theodore King threw 46-1 in the WCAL trials which is #2 all-time for the Warriors. His throw finished 9th, just ¼ of an inch short of making the final. In the triple jump Jeremy Thompson advances to the CCS Semi-Finals with a 3rd place finish jumping 43-3.
