Shelby Smallwood has been on a tear this season getting her first invitational win at the CCS Top 8 meet at Los Gatos High School Friday.  She dominated the field at the CCS Top 8 invitational, which features a preview of the best athletes in the section.  Her time of 12.39 seconds beat the field by a whomping 0.30 seconds.  Placing on the podium in elite invitationals like Stanford and Arcadia she has set herself apart as one of the favorites heading into the WCAL and CCS Championship races this May.

Just a freshman, Smallwood runs with the maturity and tenacity of a veteran athlete.  Her personal best of 12.30 run earlier this year at the West Coast Relays ranks her #3 all-time for the Warriors behind Dahlys Marshall and Krystal Carter.  While Smallwood has been superb in the 100 this year she has been outstanding in other events as well running 25.40 for 200 meters (#6 all-time for the Warriors) and was a member of the school record DMR team at the Arcadia Invitational.

Team highlights from the meet:
  • Morgan Lira was fighting off a cold but still managed to turn in solid performances in the 800 meters (2:24.42) and 1600 meters (5:22.98).
  • Emily Blaha placed in the top 10 running a season best 11:44.97 in the 3200 meters.
  • Ryan Severson placed 5th in the 100 meters running 11.29 and placed 4th in the 200 meters running 22.94.
  • In the 400 meters Cal McNabb ran 51.01 and Travis Lowder 52.53 respectively.
  • Sean Davis placed 5th in the 800 meters with 1:56.48.
  • The Boys 4 x 100 meters placed third in their heat in what was a season best time but was DQ'd for a zone violation.
