Warriors Finish 9th at Stanford Invitational

The Valley Christian girls cross country team had high expectations as they prepared to take part in the Stanford Invitational Saturday. Their effort did not disappoint as the No. 10 Warriors placed 9th in the team competition on the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, one of the elite invitational races on the west coast. They finished just one place behind division rival Aptos, the defending CCS Champions and top CCS team in the race.

Despite near triple digit temperatures there was some outstanding performances by the team. Morgan Lira once again led the team with a 6th place finish in the Division 3 race pacing the 5k in 19:11. She was followed closely by Emily Blaha in 19:54 in 18th place.

Freshman Jessica Xu continued to improve finishing 3rd for the Warriors in 21:54. Sarah Blaha ran her first race of the season and was key in the team’s success finishing 4th for the Warriors in 22:36. Morgan Rosa-Diniz rounded out the scoring five in 22:41.

“Our number 3 and 4 runners had a tough day and I am proud of the rest of the team stepping up and picking up the slack, “said Coach Josh Small. “There are going to be days when people have off days and they really showed what a complete team effort can do.”

The Warriors look to carry their momentum into October as the racing season heats up. The Varsity Girls will have split squads for the next series of races as they compete in their first WCAL meet October 6th and at the Clovis Invitational on October 9th.
