Warriors Battle in WCAL Opener

The Warriors hosted Presentation and Bellarmine in opening WCAL action Wednesday.  While Bellarmine, the defending WCAL Champions, kept many top athletes at home there wasn't a shortage of top times.  It was a solid debut for the Warriors with many earning marks on the Warriors all-time list.

The wind and rain made for some adverse conditions but it didn't seem to have much effect on the quality of performances.  The boys 100 meters saw top finishes from Julian Tuyor (11.42) and Jarrod Lawson (11.51) both finish in the top 3 with personal best times.  Tuyor came back to finish 1st in the 200 meters later that day.  Also in the sprints, middle distance runner Sean Davis won the 400 meters in 51.66, a personal best that is his second in 5 days.  The senior broke his own school record running 4:17 in the 1600 meters Saturday.

The distances saw solid performances from Eyobed Mesfun who led start to finish winning the 1600 metes in a strategic 5:03.  It was a solid day for the distance crew as many of the freshman runners had solid performances in their first run at 1600 meters.  Senior Daniel Kliensmith continues to improve running a solid 20 second personal best over last season.  Frosh-Soph runner Matt Lundy also continues to impress winning his race in 2:18.

Theodore King continues to work out the kinks of his new spin move and while "it was an ugly, ugly throw," according to King his toss of 46-3 was good enough to win on the cold, rainy day.

The girls had a solid showing of their own narrowly losing the team battle with Presentation 54-60.  Kristin Sato got a personal best in the 100 meters (12.88) and solidified herself at #10 on the team's all-time list.  Shelby Smallwood was a double winner in the 400 and 200 meters and continued to run at a high level as one of the best in the WCAL.  Newcomer Mary Ellen Bradley has only been out a couple of weeks after the conclusion of the basketball season but ran a shocker inthe 400 meters winning the JV race in 62.25, which is #10 on the team's all-time list.

Another athlete just out after the basketball season Robiana Johnson also had a stellar debut of her own.  Her mark of 15-5 in the long jump and 4-8 in the high jump both earn recognition on the team's all-time list.  Joining her in the over 15 foot club is Lydia Sum (15-1) and Elaine Ma (15-0), both in the top 10 all-time marks.  Johnson and Ma both earned recognition on the all-time list in the high jump as well hitting marks of 4-8 and 4-6 respectably.

In the distances Morgan Lira won the 1600 meters (5:31) while Jessica Xu won the 800 meters (2:34).  Kristin Uda represented well in the throws and was a double winner in the shot put (28-6) and in the discus (69-9).

The Warriors will travel to the St. Francis Invitational Saturday then host SHC in WCAL action on Wednesday.
