Kristin Sato Wins Long Jump CCS Title!

Kristin Sato has been on a mission this season to break the 18 foot mark in the long jump and it came to fruition with a CCS Title and school record.  Her win in the long jump also earns her a trip to the State Championships next Friday.  Sato has been on fire in the month of May winning the WCAL title in the Long Jump and the Triple Jump and now adds a CCS Championship in the Long Jump.  Her win came in spectacular fashion leading the field from her first jump of the night with a mark of 17-11.  She continued to get stronger as the competition continued, her final result of 18-3.25 (with a wind legal +1.2) was on her 5th jump and was not only enough to win the event but smashed her own school record of and was her first jump over the 18 mark.  Her mark currently ranks her #58 all time in CCS history, a span well over 40+ years.

It was a good night for Sato who also started off the evening finishing 5th in the triple jump hitting 36-3, also a school record and personal best.

Another field athlete punched his ticket to the State meet by finishing in the top three and is the only boy to represent this year's team.  Triple Jumper Jeremy Thompson will also be competing at the State Championships with his 3rd place finish with a mark of 44-3.75, just 1/4 an inch from 2nd place.

Shelby Smallwood finished 2nd with her time of 12.02 in the 100 meters to advance to the State Championships as well.  Her time was wind aided but solidifies her as the #3 all-time 100 meter runner of all-time for the Warriors.  Smallwood also finished 5th in the 200 with a time of 25.17.

It was a tough day at the CCS Finals for distance runner Morgan Lira who was representing the Warriors in the 3200 meters.  Lira finished 12th in 11:48, but the big story was two weeks ago.  After being hit hard with a cold the week of the WCAL Finals and after missing a couple days of school she had to take herself to her physical limit to make CCS.  She advanced with her 2nd place from league and after a low-key week she again took herself to the limit just to qualify for the final.  Lira battled in the race and stood strong through 2000 meters but being ill and maxing out for the third 2 mile race over the last 13 days took its toll the final three laps.

"It is the time of year when finals, AP tests, sports finals and a sudden change in weather all contribute to reek havoc on the immune system at the end of the school year," Coach Small said.  "Morgan really had to battle to get to the Finals and it is tough to push yourself that hard aerobically three times in a span of 2 weeks.  It just isn't enough time to fully recover.  We are all proud of her getting here!"

It was a dramatic day for Sean Davis as well who took a spill about 5 meters from the finish line in the Boys 800 meters.  Davis put himself in perfect position and was running a strategic race through the first lap when Chris Waschura of Woodside broke it open at 300 meters.  The pack surges and Davis was leading the charge of the chase pack.  Coming through 600 meters Davis took the lead and held it through the curve.  Waschura surged and took the lead as Davis was still battling for a State position when his legs gave out about 20 meters from the finish.  "My legs were full of lactic acid and when I took my stride there was nothing there to hold me up," Sean Davis said after his race.  "I'll be back next year!"
