Arcadia Invitational: Lira Sets Personal Best in 3200 meters

The Arcadia Invitational has long been considered the place where the nation's top athletes clash in mid-season action and this year is no different.  5 national leaders along with top athletes from 26 states, as well as New Zealand and Canada are scheduled to compete in 245 events over 2 days.

Setting the stage Friday night are the relays and the 3200 meter seeded and open sections.  Representing the Warriors in the 3200 meters Friday was Valley Christian runner Morgan Lira.  Currently the section leader in the event she ran aggressively the first mile passing through in 5:25 challenging the lead pack and the sub 11 barrier.  Powering through laps 5 and 6 the pace dropped off but she rebounded finishing with a 79 second lap that resulted in a 3 second personal best.

"Morgan is a competitor and you get the feeling when she is out there anything can happen," Coach Small said.  "She always goes for it and you have to admire that.  We have some work to do with our middle laps but she fought back and finished strong.  It takes a lot of guts to dig out of a couple slow laps which is a good sign moving forward into the championship phase next month."

Lira competes Saturday night in the Invitational DMR along with Emily Blaha, Shelby Smallwood and Isabel Garcia where she will anchor the relay's 1600 meter leg.

  1. Morgan never ceases to amaze. She just has to learn how to not get bored in the middle of the race.
